November Choir Notes

Congratulations to EVERYONE on an amazing term 1! What a fabulously talented group of students we have!  I love my job because of these kids- they are amazing people.

Important Dates:

November:

  • November 17-21: Seussical, our school musical! You can purchase tickets online at this link! Going is not required, of course, but I will offer 10 points extra credit to students who go and support the theater program.  Just bring me your ticket stub!
December:
  • Thursday, December 1: Temple Square Performances.  During the holiday season, Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake turns in to a community meeting place for choirs all over the state of Utah.  Our entire choir program will be performing at 5:00 p.m. in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.  At 6:30 p.m., the Concert Choir and Madrigals will perform at the Assembly Hall. For the Men's and Women's Choirs, this performance is worth 20 points. For the Madrigals and Concert Choir, it is worth 40 points. Please come and bring friends! This is SUCH a cool venue to hear our holiday songs.  Thursday nights aren't super crowded on Temple Square, so we like to have an audience.  We will have a bus taking students to and from temple square after both performances are over. Concert Dress for students.
  • Monday, December 12: This is our caroling social hosted by the HHS Choir Council.  It is from 6:00-7:30 p.m. We meet in the choir room and then break in to groups to carol in the neighborhood. After, we have hot cocoa and treats in the choir room. This is a great opportunity to do your "Sing to Serve" assignment (see important assignments below). It is not required. Casual (warm) Dress.
  • Thursday, December 15: This is our big term holiday concert! Call time for students will be 6:00 p.m. and the concert will be at 7:00 p.m. The concert is free for all to enjoy. Concert Dress.
  • Wednesday, December 21: This is the band/orchestra concert.  We are combining on at least 3 numbers with the band and orchestra this season.  The orchestra is coming to our concert on December 15, so we are joining them on theirs as well.  I am requiring this for Concert Choir and Madrigals (20 points) because they have the most music combined with the orchestra.  We would love for Women's and Men's Choir members to join us as well on our final combined song, but it's not required.  Concert Dress.

Important Assignments:

  • Sing to Serve: Instead of an in-class performance, students are required to do a musical service project by singing for people in the community.  They can use the caroling social as their service project if they would like.  After, the need to write a 1 page paper about their experience. This is due the last day before the holiday break (December 23).
  • Concert Report: There are two great opportunities to get concert reports done easily this term.  For Men's and Women's Choirs, they can watch and hour of other choirs on temple square after they complete their performance while the CC and Mads are singing in the Assembly Hall.  Then, they can ride the bus back with us at 7:30 p.m. For any of the choirs, you can count the band/orchestra concert as long as you come at the beginning and watch the entire concert until it's your turn to sing.
  • Concerts: I must know at least 3 weeks in advance if a student will be missing any of the performances in December.  For Men's and Women's Choirs, that's December 1st and December 15th.  For Concert Choir, that's December 1st, 15th, and 21st.  Madrigals will be receiving a separate calendar on Friday with the schedule of all their performances.  Those who cannot attend for legitimate reasons excused by me three weeks in advance will be given alternate assignments.

For Women's Choir Parents and Students Only:

  • We recently got an incredible opportunity to participate in a special Women's Choir Festival at the University of Utah on March 29th.  This was NOT originally on our calendar of important events, so please add it.  The girls can count it for their term 4 concert report.  The women's choirs from 9 schools will be joining together to workshop with the Women's Choir Directors from BYU (Jean Applonie), UVU (Cherilyn Worthen), and the U of U (Jessica Napoles).  Then, we will perform on a concert together.  It is going to be a marvelous opportunity and I am beside myself that we get to participate!
Other:

  • I would still love pictures from our last concert- please email me if you got any! Did anyone get some of the Scariff School of Irish dance?
