Psi Phi host talent competition
The Iota
Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and Salt Lake Community College
will host the Omega Talent Hunt Competition April 23 at 1 p.m. The finals
competition will be held in the Grand Theatre at
SLCC, South City Campus, 1575 S. State Street, Salt Lake City. Admission is
free and open to the public.
Utah high
school students will perform in one of five areas: music, vocal or instrumental
(classical, semi-classical, gospel and jazz); interpretive movement to music
(ballet, modern dance and tap); speech (poetry, orations and monologues); and
art (visual, sculptures and photography). The winner of the local competition
will receive $1,000 and advance to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s 12th
District Conference Talent Hunt Competition May 21 in Phoenix. The winner of
the 12th District competition will receive $1,000 and advance to the
International Talent Hunt Demonstration in Las Vegas in July. The local state
competition is open only to Utah students in grades 9 through 12. All
contestants must compete as soloists; no group performances are allowed.
Online
pre-screening registration begins on Jan. 4 and closes on Feb. 1. The website
address for online registration is www.Que-TriIota.org. Professionals will
adjudicate the initial online pre-screening process, the second round of live
auditions and finals competition. Auditions will take place on Feb. 20, 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. at SLCC’s Student Center on the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
Omega Psi
Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded in 1911 and incorporated in 1914 at Howard
University, Washington D.C. The Fraternity has been active nationally and
internationally for over 104 years. One of the fraternity’s key international
mandated programs is the Talent Hunt. The Talent Hunt Program was established
in 1945 and is implemented worldwide annually by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Inc. Its purpose is to expose and encourage young gifted, visual and performing
artists while assisting them in furthering their education.
The Grand
Theatre is a 1,100-seat venue located at Salt Lake Community College’s historic
South City Campus, home of the innovative, state-of-the-industry Center for
Arts and Media. The Grand was chosen by Sundance Institute to be a screening venue for
an international audience during the annual Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and
2016. The theatre
dates back to the 1930s when it was part of South High School, which SLCC
purchased in 1989, a year after the school closed.
